How does it work?

In psychoanalytic psychotherapy the therapist helps you understand the conscious and unconscious origins of your present difficulties. This is done through exploring together your thoughts, feelings, anxieties, memories, dreams and fantasies. The therapy takes place over time, in a safe, confidential and reliable setting. This gives you an opportunity to see how forgotten aspects of your early life and childhood patterns of relating find themselves repeated in the relationship with your therapist, and with other people in your life, in a way that is unhelpful to you. With the skilled understanding and support of your therapist, you can become aware of what is being repeated from the past, how you might leave this behind, and understand and accept yourself better.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy requires considerable time and commitment from both the therapist and the patient, but the rewards can be substantial and enduring.
